Ear Training Methods - Introduction

Welcome to our Ear Training Methods page.
Eartraining is a vital skill for all instrumentalists, writers and arrangers, as it helps you "hear ahead" in your playing and writing, and write down the music that you hear. Our Eartraining courses were originally developed for the Grove School of Music, and use the 'solfeg' system (DO-RE-MI etc) to name the notes in a major scale. Both books are available with audio CDs.
Level One is ideal for beginners, and works on hearing and transcribing major scale resolutions, melodic and harmonic intervals, diatonic triads, simple chord progressions, bass lines, and melodic dictation.
Level Two then works on transcribing triad progressions (used in pop and rock styles), 'II-V-I'-style progressions (used in jazz styles), modal scales, key changes, and combining melodic and harmonic dictation.
